get to know your photographer
I’m Kyami, your biggest, most overly enthusiastic cheerleader and jack-of-all-trades creative professional. As a professionally certified kimono dresser and instructor, I love giving my clients the chance to experience kimono and support this beautiful tradition that has captured my heart since I was a child.
I’ve never had a photoshoot that wasn’t filled with fun and laughter, because I love what I do and I love getting to know the people I’m working with. Each session is an adventure we take together, whether we’re telling a story we’ve created, marking an important milestone or celebrating exactly who you are.
I speak English and 日本語。
When you become the image of your own imagination, it's the most powerful thing you could ever do.

Photoshoots are my canvas, to paint a picture through every medium available to me. To do that, I knew I needed to do it all, so I became a photographer, retoucher, makeup artist, hair stylist, kimono dresser, tsumami zaiku artist, seamstress, and crafter. That way, you can leave it all to me! Remember, the whole quote is: “Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
I started KiraKira Artistry during my university years in Kyoto, when I saw a need to make traditional garments, dressing, and commemorative photoshoots more accessible to financially burdened college students preparing for Seijinshiki. But I thought, what’s a Seijinshiki celebration without hair, makeup, and kanzashi? I was already a photographer and kimono dresser, but hair and makeup were touch and go for a while. (I’ll never forget the time I made a friend look like an 80s glam rocker... and no, that wasn’t the look we were going for.) Still, I loved giving people this opportunity and seeing how happy they felt afterward. I knew I wanted to keep doing it, but I also wanted to offer the best experience I possibly could.
So when I returned to the US, I pursued a diverse creative education and earned additional professional certifications in hair, makeup, and tsumami zaiku. Being a certified kimono dresser already, I actively pursue continuing education to keep up with modern trends. I wanted to do it all, and I wanted to do it to the best of my ability.
From there, KiraKira Artistry grew and evolved, shaped by my love of the ocean, the earth, the diversity of human heritage, and the realm of fantasy that shapes our world’s stories and drives our imaginations to look beyond the mundane. My work tends to walk the edge of whimsy, leaving you somewhere between this world and the fantastical. No matter what your vision is, no matter what you dream to be, no matter what you wish to celebrate, I’m here to make it magical.
I love working with children! I am a mom and certified ESL teacher with specialty certificates in teaching English to Young Learners. I have years of experience engaging young children, so I know lots of tricks to make photoshoots fun and successful; especially for Shichi Go San!
I love the classical Japanese arts! Over the years I have studied Nihon Buyo, Kotsuzumi, Nagauta, Kimono Kistuke, Kimono Making and Tsumami Zaiku. I'm happy to have been able to call Kyoto, what some call the beating heart of traditional arts, home.
I graduated with a degree in International Relations!... with a focus on the history, development and role of traditional garments in shaping identity. And then I became a photographer!
I love chasing the seasons! Cherry Blossoms and Wisteria in the spring, Hydrangea and Sunflowers in the summer, Momiji and Pumpkins in the fall, snow and ice in the winter. The seasons are my biggest inspiration!
"I seriously don’t even know where to begin — this experience was so special. From the moment I showed up, I felt totally pampered... Walking under the cherry blossoms in full traditional bridal attire with my husband felt like something out of a movie..."
"I felt radiant, playful, and completely at ease — and it shows in every single photo. If you’re looking for a creative, soul-nourishing, joy-filled experience… this is it."
"Everything just worked together, like each piece was meant to be part of the same story.
This was more than just a shoot — it felt like a celebration of culture, nature, and joy. I’ll never forget how powerful and beautiful I felt that day."
